I mean... the whole thing is wonderful. Really great, but the last panel just oozes with craft & care. Lovely as always, R. Dart.

Thanks Mr.Esty. Your kind words are like a mint julep on my brain. I'm glad you like the last drawing, 'cuz that's the one I drew three goddam times and it still ain't to my likin'.

that's awesome -- what a strange mix of innocence and darkness. :)

Thanks1 A lot of those old folk songs are chirpy diddies about death and poverty. That's why we like 'em.

One of my favorite things is how you never actually see the ace of the man. This is a lovely set of illustrations! Even your text is wonderful. I also think that last panel is wonderful.
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 06:56 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much! I couldn't figure out how to draw the murderer, so I just made him all shadowy.

gorgeous! your style here reminds me of Cyril Pedrosa's work in Three Shadows, the flowing pencils are just great. And the song is great too, I love Kristin Hersh's version.

That's the first thing I thought (re: Three Shadows)!

This is lovely and should be published immediately!

This is all kinds of fantastic. And it brings me back to the old days when i first listened to Nick Cave…
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:07 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I think Olivia Newton John did a cover of this song too, in the Seventies. Johnny Cash did a cover as well, but rewrote the lyrics.

reminds me not only of the aforementioned Three Shadows, but also of Night of the Hunter -- really amazing work.
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:12 pm (UTC)
Well, I am an avid Noir fan, so being compared to Night of the Hunter is a compliment indeed. Thanks!

Gorgeous ! Now I want to know how to sing it.
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:16 pm (UTC)
The version I worked off of is from the Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music,Volume Four. Recorded by the Blue Sky Boys in 1936. I think it's on Youtube.

Oh boy, that is something.
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:19 pm (UTC)
Well, it's something all right. How come you only see things you'd like to change until after it's done?

renesears[info]renesears on November 4th, 2009 01:36 pm (UTC)
Wow, that's beautiful. The inking is just sublime. I love the way the lines in the water and the trees (and her hair!) echo each other. Everything looks so fluid. And the lettering is great.

I really want to sit under the tree in the second to last panel. Preferably when the murderer isn't there.
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:21 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Yeah, the only thing that tree needs is a tire swing.

Really beautiful stuff! I love that water and the trees and those turtles on the last panel!
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:29 pm (UTC)
Me like to draw trees and it hurts if I don't draw the turts. Thanks for the compliments, coming from you I feel like a hamster getting a pat from God.

Thanks Jordyn! It is my goal to be charming and very sad... well, at least I got the very sad part down.

Oh, please tell me this will see print.

Not that I'm not seeing it now and loving it tenderly. But I'd love to hold this in my hands.

Excellent work Lady Dart
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:33 pm (UTC)
I don't have any plans to print this right now, but I still would like to draw some other songs, so maybe I could do a volume of old ditties.

The fact that you aren't rich and famous proves that the universe is stoopid. Where are the fucking accolades!?
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:35 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I think this every time I see your work. It's proof the universe is stoopid.

Christ, that's beautifully done.
Reminds me a bit of Pedrosa's Three Shadows book, but still identifiably you.
Amazing. Enjoy your newfound time off!
Rebecca Dart[info]r_dart on November 4th, 2009 07:36 pm (UTC)
Thanks, Mike! It's amazing how much work you can get done when you're not working.
