Such Nonsense!

Gustave Veerbeek is one of my favourite cartoonists from the turn of the last century. Born in 1867 in Nagasaki, Japan to Dutch missionaries his art was greatly influenced by the Japanese master printmakers. He's most famous for his Sunday comic strip "The Upside-Downs"; six panels that you read as you would any regular newspaper strip, but then turn it upside down and it continues. He did 64 of these, an amazing feat!

However, my favourite comic of his is "The Terror of the Tiny Tads". It's about four interchangeable little boys crossing paths with fantastical creatures who's names where usually a mix of an animal and an inanimate object. That was the inspiration for my homage to Mr. Verbeek, who, in my humble opinion, should be as remembered as McCay or Herriman.

Thanks! A little bit of squealing is the best compliment an artist can get.

Veerbeek
Veerbeek is indeed awesome. I first saw his work in one of my daughter's Nick magazines of all places. The terror of the Tiny Tads should be in a quality reprint volume alongside Herriman, King, McCay. This is a great tribute and really catches the spirit of the Tiny Tads. Love to see another one sometime.
Rebecca Dart r_dart on January 18th, 2010 09:52 pm (UTC)
Re: Veerbeek
Last year Sunday Press came out with a huge hard-cover book that reprinted all of the Upside-Downs, some of the Tiny Tads and some of his "The Loony Lyrics of Lulu". It's a beautiful book, well worth the hefty sticker price.

Tasty...
I would so buy copies of this for all the parents of smalls I know if there were a hard copy - might you consider a lulu publication? I suppose something longer than 12 pages might be required for such a think, but gracious it's cute! (I love the Figuanas!)

Re: Tasty...
Thank you so much. It actually brought me a lot of joy to this. If inspiration strikes I'll definitely make more.

Silverstein's Zoo
This is really super great. A wonderful tribute.

The animals also remind me of Shel Siverstein's hilarious made up animals from a Playboy comic, Silverstein's Zoo. Go to http://books.google.com, search for "Playboy 50 years the cartoons," click on the book, then read pp. 106-113.

Re: Silverstein's Zoo
Yeah, great stuff! Shel Silverstein is amazing. There was another old strip from the early 1900's by John Benson called "The Woozlebeasts" with crazy mixed-up animals. It's such fun.

You remember how as a kid you read the best picture books, and they always just existed-- noone seemed to draw them because they were so good, people just didn't do that?
You're one of those people.
