Brienne of Tarth

While reading a book have you ever said to yourself, "I really want to draw this character. I really need to know what they look like."?

So, I'm reading the George R.R. Martin's series "A Song of Fire and Ice". It's a fantasy epic with lots of sex and violence ( I'm half way threw the fourth book, " A Feast For Crows", there is supposed to be seven books in total, the fifth book hasn't come out yet and is way overdue) There's this one character Brienne of Tarth, she described as being very unattractive; huge and horsey, with a wide set nose, gapped teeth and stringy hair, she's shy from having been teased her whole life, yet remains a bit naive about the world. I guess I can kind of relate.

Just a quick reminder that the Ayden Gallery opening is tomorrow, Jan. 8th. It starts at 7 and is in Tinsel Town Mall, second level, their phone # is: 778-891-4310. There will be about a dozen local artists showing their work including three new pieces from yours truly. It will be fun. I hope to see you there!

The modeling you do with pencil (or is it charcoal?), the way you shade, just breaks my heart every time, it's so damn beautiful.
Mazel tov on the show! Have fun!

This is pencil (5B), and I've discovered the wonderful world of the paper stump for shading.

Thanks, Hugo, I'm all prepared to be socially awkward, but an art show is one place where you can get away with it.

Sweet. I know exactly who you're talking about that's a lovely rendering of her. Nice work. She's a great character.

Thanks so much!

Yeah! And the great thing about it being in the mall is that you can get some T.T. at T.T. ( Taco Time at Tinsel Town).

ASOIAF ftw! :D brienne is one of my favorite characters, glad to see someone agrees!

Yeah, she's the best. Martin creates the best female characters. All of his woman have such depth and go through the greatest changes.

Halfway through, hunh?

[refrains from spoilage]

Nice work on the pic. Be interested to see what you think when you're done.

Well, I'm glad it picks up. The first half so far has been mostly people going from one place to the next. I'm hoping the ending has something to do with dragons, but don't tell me.

I am going to come look at your artwork tomorrow! I am bringing my "awestruck" expression.
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 8th, 2010 08:43 pm (UTC)
Thanks Tony! Don't worry I haven't forgotten about you and I'll sending you an e-mail soon.

hello!i love your art and had to come out of lurking to say how thrilled i am you drew her. i *love* her character and can't wait to read more about her in the future books. thank you for this!
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 8th, 2010 08:47 pm (UTC)
Thanks for commenting! Yeah, she's a great character and I hope Martin finishes the next book soon. Maybe we should pull a Misery thing; take him to a winter cabin, break his ankles and make him finish it.

Fantastic shading, and I love her expression.

I will so be at the show, just try and stop me!
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 8th, 2010 08:48 pm (UTC)
Thanks Max!

We'll see you tonight, and I won't try to stop you.

I'd love to come to the opening, but I'm in Seattle until Monday, so I will have to make do with simply gazing at it lovingly another day soon. Hope you get tons of people, though! Battle kittens forever!
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 8th, 2010 08:49 pm (UTC)
The show will be up until Feb. 7th, so there's plenty of time.

argh, that is really just great. I love those books so much. I hope the series gets green lit, I would love to see who they cast for her
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 8th, 2010 08:57 pm (UTC)
It's going to be interesting. Aren't they going to wait until the books are finished?

I was looking at a lot of other artists renditions of Brienne and I found most people tended to make her too pretty and feminine. I'm afraid this might happen for the TV series.

I am picturing Jane on Deadwood, and thinking that the HBO/Showcase are capable of having an awesome non-girly female character.

This is a great drawing! It was great to see you and everyone at the show last night.
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 10th, 2010 06:31 pm (UTC)
It was great seeing you the gallery show too, Jason. Thanks for coming by and being all supportive 'n stuff.

"Aren't they going to wait until the books are finished?"

No, they're done principal filming on the pilot and then the POWERS THAT BE at HBO are going to decide on whether to give it a full series in March. *keeps fingers crossed* (It's my favourite book series of all time. Even though it's not done yet.)

And that's a fantastic picture. I was trying to imagine who else I'd like to see you draw from the books, and even though Arya is probably my favourite, it'd probably be Sansa. Or maybe the Hound.
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 14th, 2010 03:16 am (UTC)
It will be interesting to see how they condense all those character threads, especially as the series progresses.

Arya's my overall favourite, but I was thinking of drawing the Hound next. He's kinda sexy in a psychopathic sort of way.
Scott Faulknerinkboy on January 8th, 2010 04:15 pm (UTC)
That's great! I'd love to draw more fantasy but I'm not good at the armor and such - all my characters would have to be naked barbarians.

Seems everyone I know is reading/has read "Fire and Ice". Looks like I need to get on the bandwagon!
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 8th, 2010 09:04 pm (UTC)
The books are fun, page-turners. If you like your fantasy dark and gritty with really memorable characters, you'd like these books.

Armour is a bitch to draw. I was using my LOTR books for reference, but damn, those iron suits are so complicated. So, yeah, I'm gonna stick to nude barbarians too.
tylerhutchisontylerhutchison on January 9th, 2010 01:23 am (UTC)
Oh god! This is awesome! I can't look at it for very long because I am afraid I might forget how I picture Brienne. I picture her with a long face and huge underbite...

I would love to see more Song of Ice and Fire fan art from you! So awesome!!
Rebecca Dartr_dart on January 10th, 2010 06:34 pm (UTC)
Thanks Tyler. It is hard sometimes to see a character visualized sometimes. Frodo will forever be Elijah Wood for me now.

colleen macIsaacgalsan on January 31st, 2010 04:30 am (UTC)
We've been slowly listening to the audiobooks and finally got to the part where they introduce her (I had been waiting for it!), so I had to show Dorian this drawing as they were describing her. So great!
